Ulaanbaatar Morning Star residences

colorful concept for the city's

growing housing market

ONG&ONG

Location: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Year: 2013 – 2017

Project size: 25,300m2

Role: Playground design, facade design support

Located in the residential area on the east of Ulaanbaatar this multifamily housing project is bound to stand out from its surrounding and make a local iconic statement with its characteristic colorful facade full of popped out windows that are overlooking the surrounding mountains. Rooftop of the first floor parking lot replaces the ground floor landscape and uses the pop out boxes concept to open up some light wells for the car park underneath. This rooftop is the building’s gathering place - a playground, rest area, barbeque area and meeting place and shares the same color accents with the facade - mainly the colors typically found in traditional Mongolian furniture decorations.

The rooftop landscape concept is hoping to introduce an interesting community focused experiment in the still young multifamily housing models of Ulaanbaatar. It provides spaces that encourage the traditional community oriented neighborhoods and equips these spaces with modern facilities.
